Each benefiting certain other characters. Each character has linking abilities, leader abilities and passive abilities. The strategy comes into choosing heroes which synergize the best with each other. While the core gameplay interaction is simple, the strategy in who you bring into the battle is where the depth comes in. In the example below, my hero type is red, so I want to select red balls. Additionally, matching your character’s type with orb colour yields double energy. The board works with a path system: selecting an orb at the bottom connects with its own colour as it moves towards your opponent granting additional Ki. If you collect enough Ki you will launch a super attack, a vastly more damaging and visually impressive assault with iconic moves. In the core battle, your focus is on charging your character by collecting Ki (energy). The game board pulls from puzzle RPG games by having a board you manipulate to deal damage (similar to Puzzles & Empires and Puzzle Quest). Instead of a standard turn-based RPG, they opted for something completely different. Where Dragon Ball Z adjusts the formula is in the core gameplay. For more on how those games work, check out our deconstructions here. The game loops are designed similar to Summoner’s War, Fire Emblem Heroes, Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes, Heroes’ Charge and various other Gacha-based RPG Games on mobile. Developed by BANDAI NAMCO, the game is actually 3 separate games: one released in Japan ( ドラゴンボールZ ドッカンバトル) one in China ( 龙珠激斗) and one Globally, for all other countries. If you haven’t played the game, it is a Gacha-based RPG Fighting game using the Dragon Ball Z license.
TT: We are definitely trying to close the gap, but also take it on a different path. Are there plans to perhaps close this time gap in the future? However, the Japanese version usually receives updates first, with the western version taking a couple months to receive the update.
We want to make sure that everyone feels that it’s fair and if other people have an advantage, then it’s not something that is specific to them paying money.ĪL: There’s now a Japanese and a western version. We were really trying to bring a game that nobody has ever tried before.
We were sort of worried about whether it would spread out because the genre is an entirely new one to the series, because you immediately think of an action-oriented game, or a fighting game. TT: In terms of reception, we were really hoping that we released the app at the right time, considering how Dragon Ball Super was coming along and the hype generated around an official Dragon Ball Z smartphone app.
